i've brought my set up (with my laptop but not with the old mac) to a couple different places and it went well. nothing that had conditions even remotely like burning man though.

I've not been asked to post this - I also want to keep all names out of this post, however, some of you will already know the parties involved - please respect my wishes to KEEP NAMES OUT OF THIS. I dont want this to be taken as a negative toward anyone, it truly is not meant to be, I can see each side's reasons for what they're doing. This is a call to save the Blood Vessel, nothing more; I'm friends with everyone involved and wish to remain such... I merely wish to save our art car from being sold off.

The extremely condensed back-story as I know it: the BV was purchased and rebuilt as a partnership vehicle - two friends came together to see her come to reality. She needed a lot of attention, time, and money to rebuild and modify. Those things were put in to each persons level of ability. However, joint ownership is not always an easy venture. Lets just suffice it to say that this one has suffered a few hardships, and to keep the peace after BM07 the joint owners decided to split ways in regards to this project.

Well, that brings us to the here and now - retaining-owner needs to pay off leaving-owner for their portion of the investments. Retaining-owner currently does not have the necessary funds to pay this debt; I'd put up the money, IF I had it, but the sad fact is that I dont. We're not talking a ton of money here, but a substantial enough amount that it's now to the point of we either find a source for the funds, or we're going to have to sell the BV to pay off the debt. I really dont want to see that happen, so I'm turning to my friends, my community and asking for your assistance..... if you'd like to continue to see the BV on the playa, we need financial assistance, and the sooner the better. If leaving-owner can be paid off, we'll be able to move forward with plans for the BV; if not, well, the BV as we know it will be put up for sale.

We do have a Pay Pal account:

TempleOfCommunity@yahoo.com

Note: Temple of Community is an auxiliary project, separate from the Blood Vessel, but organized by the BV crew. Please note that the donations is intended for the BV rescue, not for the ToC. Funds are being managed and kept separate.

Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com).
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $200, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

This will be the official kick-off for the Zero1 festival, and the beginning of an entire month of monkey business in downtown San Jose.

The dedication will take place at 6pm on Saturday, May 17th at the Children's Discovery Museum - Discovery Meadow (directions here: http://tinyurl.com/6bbop3). Once the ribbon is cut by Melissa Alexander, Executive Director of BRAF, and Peter Hudson, the artist and creator of Homouroboros, the drums will start to pound and the zeotrope will start to spin. Get ready for what Wired Magazine called the winner of the "WOW, did you see that?" survey at Burning Man 2007.

Reception follows the ceremony, and the end of civil twilight is at 8:39pm. Be sure to see this incredible zeotrope at its best ... in full dark ... to appreciate the effects under the strobe lights of what scientists call "the persistence of vision". And don't forget, this piece will be in Discovery Meadow from May 15th - June 15th. Come by during the day, too (we'll have special daytime viewers available). Bring friends, family, kids, neighbors and co-workers! It's free to the public and a perfect fulfillment of BRAF's mission to place experimental, highly interactive art in public settings.

www.burningman.com/installa...rine_mitt

We need lots of mitts to decorate the shrine appropriately. Furthermore, we just also happen to have a spare ticket to the event. Instead of just selling the ticket and purchasing the mitts we need, we thought it would be more in tune with the spirit of the event to encourage participation. So we are going to give the ticket to a randomly chosen person from the pool of people who send us mitts.

How do you participate? Send your mitts and a note with your real name, playa name (if you have one), mailing address, phone number and email address to:

Steven Goodman
The Way of the Mitt
100 N Whisman Road, #1924
Mountain View, CA 94043

Email "steve at StevenGoodman.com" if you need a phone number for your shipment.

Donations received on or before the June 14th 2008 (Flag Day - the theme is the American Dream, afterall) will be registered for the raffle. We will announce the winner (Playa name only) on this ePlaya thread on June 16th. Donations received after that time will not be eligible to win the ticket but will still be used for the project.

How will we choose a winner? You get one chance (or ticket) to win for each different mitt you send us. Send us 18 different mitts – you get 18 chances to win. Send us 4 of the same mitt – get 1 ticket. Homemade, store purchased, new or used mitts are all good with us.

We will put all of the tickets into a bowl and choose a winner and a runner-up. The winner will have one week to acknowledge and arrange to receive the ticket. If for whatever reason we cannot arrange the ticket shipment / pickup with the winner, we will award the ticket to the runner up.

How do you get the ticket? If the winning ticket holder is in the USA, we will ship it UPS / USPS signature required. If the winning ticket holder resides outside of the USA, we will have the ticket waiting for you at Will Call.

Odds of winning: We have no idea – depends on how many people participate. Taxes: The winner pays all of the taxes, duties, etc. on this ticket. We are not liable for either a lost or misplaced ticket. Everything else: We will just have to resolve any other problems and concerns in good faith as they arise.

I'll be building a decent sized installation this year, and am looking for any and all help in planning/design. The idea is pretty simple, really. I've collected about 200 skis, and will be installing them in a vertical positon on the playa to create a field of skis approximately 100 feet by 300 feet. The center of the field will include an area for reflection, a couple of benches, and a solitary pair of skis that belonged to a friend.

I've tentatively decided to mount the skis on the playa by driving 3 foot rebar stakes into the ground about 2 feet deep, and using the remaining 1 foot section to bolt to the ski tail. I'll be drilling four holes in the ski and fitting with 2 u-bolts with nuts and plates.

So, my questions are:

Do you think this approach will work?
Will the wind be too strong for rebar stakes, are the stakes going deep enough, is 1 foot long enough on the ski?
What's the best way, within a reasonable budget, to drive the rebar?
How would you light the project at night?
What else should I be considering?

seals and recharged flux capacitor, 1

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.

Wicker Man Burning, In Fire We Trust."

Hey all

We are a bunch of Brits, loosely part of the Euroburners and Nowhere community from Europe, and we'd like to announce the Nowhere Omnibus, while reaching out to request your generous involvement / donations to make the project happen.

Full details at http://nowhereomnibus.wordpress.com

Here's our letter:

Listen: Don't ya just hate the way those freakin' art cars never go where you want them to? The way there is no decent transport on the playa? The way there's just not enough QUEUES at Burning Man?

Well, enter The Nowhere Omnibus Service!

A traditional red, double decker London Transport Routemaster, bus stops on the esplanade, A TIMETABLE, tickets, move down the bus PLEASE, room for one more on top, ding ding, next stop Centre Camp, I'm only doing my job madam, the bowler-hatted businessman rustling his copy of The Times.

Burning Man's first genuine public transport infrastructure, but also a massive art piece, running morning and evening for the whole week.

Are you interested in making this happen? Well BOrg are... that's why they're offering us a Burning Man arts grant to cover PART of the cost of this endeavour.

This is a tremendous opportunity, but to realise this dream, we need to generate funds. Having done some planning into the costs inherent in getting a bus to the playa and maintaining it safely, we know we need at least a further USD $6,000. And that's where you can help.

1. Donations. This is a big dream that will only happen with some big kindness and generosity from the community.

We are looking for individual donations of GBP £50 and upwards. In return you get kudos on the website (should you want it) and the warm feeling of having contributed to one of the most spectacular (and useful!) art projects on the playa. If seventy people can scrape together £50 each, we will be able to set this dream in motion on behalf of the whole Burning Man community. Larger and smaller donations are accepted, of course, but hopefully everyone can see that the more people donate, the closer we will all be to seeing things happen.

We'll be publishing a transparent report of the donation process, with a counter, so that progress can be observed and the website will also be updated with reports of how the whole project is progressing. Your donations will be held safely in account, so if the worst comes to the worst and we cannot collect enough to get the project underway, you will get your donation back. We've already sourced the bus - to get it onto the playa we need your generosity!

2. People. You can be a performer on the bus, part of the support crew or maybe you have mechanical skills. We need bodies to keep our bus pristine on the playa, to build bus stops and install them and to keep the hippies off of our pride and joy. Come and be part of the very first scheduled bus service at Burning Man.

To donate, find contact details for us and read further details on the project, please visit http://nowhereomnibus.wordpress.com

Yours

I need your help to settle a bet.

I think there's a real need and desire for container storage out on the playa. My wife isn't so sure.

Seems to me that there are a lot of folks who go to Burning Man like we do... have a few boxes full of BM gear, clothes, playa bikes and camp infrastructure that make the trek out to the playa, get dusty, get boxed back up (and sometimes cleaned up), and come all the way home, not to be touched again until it's time to go back out. Seems like a waste of resources, time and space to me. Isn't there a way to simplify this process?

Here's the basic idea: we drop a container at your camp, which you fill up with all your dusty Burning Man gear, then we come pick it up for you and store it until next year's burn, when it's waiting for you when you get back on playa. Variations on this theme include container size (one size for camps of 3-4 people, the other those 20' shipping containers for big theme camps), use of containers during the festival as kitchens or shelter, transport of containers from or to your home, perhaps stored for a year or two in between. We could store your bike for you for the year, so all you have to do is pack 4 to a car (plus food) and just show up. Storing art cars is another possibility, although most likely a bit further down the road. You get the idea.

If you already think this is a great idea, you can stop reading and jump to this quick survey (takes four minutes, eight tops if you're ADD like me):

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=14sPO_2f3lEHo1H7TpcTT7_2fQ_3d_3d

To set this up as a business (not profit-centric, keeping to BM principles, but still a business) will require a serious investment of time and money on our part, with no guarantee of participants. If I send out a bunch of emails/posts like this one, and get practically no response, it will seem like a pretty obvious sign. Similarly, if all the interest comes when everyone's packing up on Sunday after the burn, we won't have been able to plan for it. So we need to know: would something like this be of interest to you, and if so, can you take 4-8 minutes to tell me so, and how, and why? Or if there is someone you think might be interested in using a service like this, can you forward this to them and encourage them to respond in the next day or two? The link again:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=14sPO_2f3lEHo1H7TpcTT7_2fQ_3d_3d

We are not soliciting for sales leads or trying to get anybody to commit to anything right now. Obviously, if you want to sign up for more information down the road, we'd be happy to get your email address. All we're trying to do is see if this is an idea worth pursuing, and perhaps more than that, that the people actually interested can get it together to notify us that they would make use of such a service. Think of it more like a psychology experiment than market research.

Feel free to email me directly, too, at massive (at) gamblersruin (dot) com

Help me make my wife a believer
Hello Burning Man Art Folks,

Our installation from last year, the "Swirling Vortex", is currently collecting dust (or, shedding dust, I guess), in my basement. It's looking for a good home. Anyone have any ideas?

Here's my favorite flickr picture of it:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sgoralnick/1323855762/

And here are a bunch of construction photos showing how it was built, and how it comes apart.

http://web.mac.com/robjjensen/iWeb/Swirling%20Vortex/Vortex.html

The rungs are made of heavy-duty PVC electrical conduit. The base is all steel.

My main goal is to get it out of my basement! I would love to pass it on to someone who wants to either set it up somewhere else, or wants to reuse any of the parts in a new creation. The base, in particular, is very strong and versatile -- if you've got a project idea for something that spins, it could easily be repurposed.

Worst case, I'll donate the steel and scrap the conduit. But, I'd love to find a better home for it!

Email: robjjensen (at yahoo dot com) if you have any ideas!

Hello, I am Dr. MegaVolt. Yes, the Dr. MegaVolt that performs at Burning Man. My "slave name" is Austin Richards and I live in Santa Barbara. My wife and I own an electric golf cart in very good mechanical condition. We have decided to sell it, and hope that it will be mutated into an art car by some intrepid burners in the Santa Barbara or LA area. To see pictures of the car, please see this page:

ImageEvent.com/austinrichards/golfcart

The price is $1500 or best offer. The cart has a set of batteries that is 18 months old and has hardly been used. The cart has been to Burning Man twice. The first time was in 2004. The second was in 2006, and I replaced the batteries with new Trojan units right before we left for BM 2006. It has not been back to BM since. We have very limited storage and therefore have decided to let it go. The body is scratched in various places on the panels and metalwork. The roof is painted fluorescent pink, as we decorated the whole cart in pink fur. I removed all the fur, as it got very dirty (big surprise) out there! The bench seat and seat backs are in great condition as they were wrapped in fur that protected them. I have cleaned the whole vehicle carefully. It has two switched 48VDC circuits on it that can be used for lighting the cart up.

1) GET A PORTABLE STUDIO – Keep an art journal with you 24/7/365 as it can
be amazingly affective for you and your work. It is a powerful tool to
access your own personal creative space at the drop of a hat! Most of all it
allows you to hit the studio with out having a formal space that you
physically go to, or when you are away from your formal studio. All in all,
the important thing is that it is your space to have and to hold, regardless
of where you are and what you are doing. You can just connect with that
essential part of you that wants to WORK any time, anywhere.

2) CREATE A COMMUNITY SPACE – All over the globe there are spaces available
for rent. Do some research! Find out from who, what, when and where you can
rent out a space. Then take the space and cute it into 4 separate spaces.
You take one space and rent the other 3 out for whatever your expenses are
(rent, heat, electric). This is a totally positive, exciting way to develop
a free space for yourself and support others who are looking for inexpensive
work space and want to be around other like-minded artists! If you present
yourself to the owner of the space in a serious manner with a clear plan and
a commitment to the project he or she might even create the space for you
and keep your start up costs real low.

3) You can TAKE THIS IDEA and build on it all the way to owning your own
building with studios and a gallery, art café and so on… It has been done
all over the world for many years. Just start small, use your creative mind,
and think "space"! Just keep thinking about it until you make it happen! It
does not take money, it takes time, smarts and the willingness to believe!

Request For Proposal
Posted on January 17, 2008
Deadline: March 7, 2008

California Community Foundation Invites Los Angeles Artists to Apply for Visual Arts Fellowships

The California Community Foundation is accepting applications for its 2008 Fellowships for Visual Artists.

The foundation will award a total of $260,000 in fellowships to fourteen Los Angeles artists working in the visual arts. Ten fellowships of $20,000 each will be awarded to mid-career artists, while four fellowships of $15,000 each will be awarded to emerging artists.

Artists must be working in the visual arts (e.g., painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation, experimental film and video, interdisciplinary/mixed media, or performance art in which visual art must be a significant and integral component). Artists whose primary practice is performing or media arts (e.g., music, dance, acting, film, video, or moving animation) are not eligible.

"Mid-career artists" are defined as artists who have seven or more years of active professional experience in their field. "Emerging artists" are defined as artists who have up to seven years of professional experience in their field (excluding accomplishments during bachelors or masters degree programs). All applicants must have resided full-time in Los Angeles County for at least five years prior to the application deadline.

More on eligibility:

1. I am an artist who works in multiple disciplines. I am a painter, but I also work in photography. Should I apply for both areas?

No, you should choose a single discipline that best reflects your work.

2. I am an individual artist but have worked with an artistic team (or collaborative) for the past 10 years. All of my work samples reflect my team (collaborative). Should I apply as an individual or as a team?

The Fellowships for Visual Artists are for individual artists. Each individual artist who is part of the team (collaborative) is eligible to apply. However, recognition will be given only to the individual artist who receives the award.

3. I am currently enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program but have professionally exhibited for nine years. Am I eligible to apply?

No, students are not eligible.

4. I am an artist who has lived in Los Angeles County for more than five years but currently reside outside of the area (Orange County, Ventura, Inland Empire, etc.). Can I apply?

No, you must be a current resident of Los Angeles County.

Last year my friends and I came up with the idea of building a four person bike car. Not just any bike car, but one where all of the passengers can face each other as they ride so that they can enjoy a good conversation. Well a couple thousand hours and dollars later, our dream became a reality. The Vis-a-Vis Velocipede made it's green man debut in 2007. Permit free and solid. It is a great ride. Well built and great fun. One to four people can ride it. Ride alone and pick up friends on the way. Since we are all going to Maui together this year and are also building diesel motorcycles, it is now for sale (with no reserve!). If you had any thoughts about how great it would be to have a ride like this, this is a rare opportunity to make your dreams a reality. Check it out here:

What might really be a a footnote of interest is thar it will be used as a tool to e-radicate the "sucks" factor outta what was the single most contributing factor to last years "beige"man burn...the uninformed Noob.our beautiful interactive artmosphere The piece will educate, inspire, and delight the burning heart of the American Spirit - seduce the participant to dream,While supporting the creative resolve- toexpand their patriotic duty in new light- communally-and of coarse...illustrate " HOW TO FUCKING BURN"...
Im looking for people with welding glass construction audio -video -acting and sewing experiance.
or any other rad talent..

Calling ALL Artists For The 4th Annual Art Outside Brouhaha! March 6th – 16th 2008.
To take part in AO|08 Go Here- http://www.artoutside.org/

Ladies and gentlemen of the art world, we are seeking any and all creative humans who use their skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others. That is, we are looking for those whose life is art, and everything they do is DIY. We are searching for those who are creating the Hand-Made Nation. We are calling !ALL! make-believers, dreamers and reality re-arrangers. We are searching hi and low for lowbrow-urban-contemporary-pop-surrealism, pop art, op art, hard-edge, lyrical abstraction, post minimalism, which might be interpreted by some to mean that we are looking only for painters, but that is most definitely not the case. For you see, of course, we need masters of typography, sketchers, illustrators, satirical stencilers, screen printing is way cool, and yes, you too, graffiti fools. Least we forget every culture jammer in the hood. Do you manipulate earth/land/sand/plants/junk into art? Then we have a home for you.

Now, we know some of you may be thinking “What about Dadas’ Dadaists, though?” To this we say, but of course we are calling all inspired by DADA- for where would art be without fluxists, productivism, neoplasticism, pittura, metafisica, arbeitsrat and bauhaus. Well, we are looking for all of “you” from then and now, if any of you still are around. And one may wonder… What about the cubists? We say, “But of course.” Conceptualists? Indeed. Installationists? Please! One might ask if we are seeking anything that might fall under postmodernist modernist who are not distracted by abstractionists and other IST’S. Of course there is always impressionism, post-minimalism, pre-contemporaryism, and expressionism. Are you working in symbolism or surrealism or any of the other -isms that we have not yet mentioned? Well come on out. But wait that’s not all, that could not possibly be all this call for ARTE is all about? Well, Dali you’re right,

This call goes out to all kinetic sculptors, fire sculptors, sound artists bending invisible waves, and video projectionists playing with light. We must invite the minds of the poets and their spoken slam voices, along with improv comedians who mimic the true history of time. Or was that the klown? How can we forget about the klowns! Mimes? Performers “performing” art, puppeteers with their puppets, musicians making sounds. Oh, and least we forget outsider artists wanting to be outside.

In short, we invite all the conceivable movements, modes, and theories of art known to wo/man kind. We say to you, the Artisans of the world who wish to unite because the world needs ART, because the world’s not right. It is time, Your window of opportunity is now. Our space is your blank canvas. Your dreams are our inspiration. You and your art are invited to take part in this epic artistic endeavor.

The world may be going to hell… So let’s make some art.

I'm looking for lighting to go on a collaborative art project for BM this year. We want to use solar LED lighting for nighttime illumination. I have a low budget, my partner has a low budget. I'm applying for a grant, but obviously we are not counting on getting it.

I would *ideally* like some small LED lights to go on the sculpture (6' metal sculpture with many small nooks and crannies) and some way to mark the area around it for safety reasons. It's going to sit inside an area that is roughly 7' by 4'.

Does anyone know the best and most economical way to do this? Or does anyone have any lights they could donate to a Portland burner who would gladly return them or pass them on after the burn?

much love,

was not always this huge, nor I.
We grew like redwoods, equally
slow, together. I found
my bicycle crippled, tireless,
tangled in the kudzu. Resurrected,
shining like a Cadillac, we pedalled
Southern streets, the diamonds
sparkling in the asphalt rushing
beneath us. I felt the tug
of my bicycle while chained
to its rack outside the Highlander,
where I'd chained myself
to a barstool. My bicycle grew
lonely. I found another bicycle
rusting in the Salvation Army.
Sparks flew, molten metal, a bicycle
marriage. Still, my bicycle pestered
me from its lonely bike rack,
witnessing after-school fights
while I licked away the amber
whiskey trapped in my cuticles.
I bought my bicycle shots of Jaeger.
We rode to Vickery's, to the Righteous
Room, to Smith's. My bicycle and I
grew attached--as they say--at the hip.
Though, realistically, we'd fused
at the crotch. Soon I saw the pebbles
below the tires were really boulders
and automobiles, that the bike trail
was actually a grid of city streets,
and the patchwork I had taken
for flagstones were houses
and skyscrapers. My bicycle and I
topped mountains, no bunnyhopped
the Rockies, splashed across a puddle--
the Pacific. We dipped gingerly down
the side of Everest and ground the spokes
against the Great Wall. And soon
my bicycle and I had grown
too big, even, for the planet, each orbit
a single secondary lap. My cap
knocked the space station into
the asteroid belt. I stroked the moon
and my fingers came away gray with dust.
My retinas sizzled in the sun's rays.

I didn’t have any drastic, life-changing breakthroughs at Burning Man this year. No lightning flashes or worlds bursting forth, no opening of some entirely new realm of knowing or feeling or sight. No paths previously unknown revealing themselves, no drastic change of course. No, none of that really, save for realizing a necessary piece of the puzzle the night of the Temple burn. But I’ll get to that later. This is not to say that I didn’t have revelatory and ecstatic moments, but they were more of the sort that widened my understanding of what was already known and felt, something akin to ripening, deepening, and expansion. I see this as an auspicious sign, an indication that I’m right where I need to be. Breakthroughs are good to pierce through stagnation, to bring you back to the path, to reveal a crucial piece that is missing, to open up something that is closed inside of you. Mastery, contrarily, is achieved in the periods of plateau, those longer periods where the breakthroughs are integrated into your being by engaging in careful, consistent work and through earnest dedication to The Great Work that supports and sustains you. This year, for me, was about integrating a series of little breakthroughs; it was about experiencing the fullness and satisfaction of doing good, hard work on the path that I have been paving for myself for quite some time. And that fullness and satisfaction had everything to do with bringing my art installation, the Greenhouse Project, to the playa.

Shanta and I rolled into Black Rock City driving the behemoth Austin community truck just as the sun was threatening to peak over the mountains to the east. Friday morning. It was chilly, that crisp, anticipatory coldness of twilight. I was excited to be there just in time for the sunrise, my favorite time on the playa. After one of the gate crew gracefully climbed the walls of the truck all the way to the front without stepping on any of our things in her search for stowaways, she dropped her keys. That’s right, she dropped her keys in a 24’ truck loaded from floor to ceiling with all sorts of stuff. So she did what any of us in her situation would have done. She dove head first into the pile as the rest of us stood around and alternated between laughing our asses off, playfully heckling her efforts, and trying to modify things at hand that could be used as a hook to fetch the keys. I think it was the placement flag that was ultimately successful as the key-fetching device. Thirty minutes later… crisis averted and bellies aching from laughter. Oh, and “Welcome home!”

Being on the playa early was really unbelievable. Everyone I introduced myself to, “I’m Laura Lea from Austin, Texas,” would respond with, “Oh, do you know [so and so]?” And, as a matter of fact, I did. The sense of community was beautiful, witnessing each other work our asses off those next few days, and throughout the event, created in me a strong sense of belonging to something way more potent and powerful than I’ve ever felt. That hard work and sense of community fed me. It very much felt like a significant piece of The Great Work.

By Sunday morning, in spite of Saturday’s near white out conditions all damn day, the community truck had been unloaded, I had put in some significant work setting up the Red Nose District – the tremendous circus theme camp on the Esplanade where I was camped, I had my art placement figured out, and my crew members for the Greenhouse Project were off duty from their various other obligations. So Casey, Gallows, Shanta, and I hit the open playa early in the morning to setup up the Greenhouse. We made good time setting up the frame, but by the time we got to the panels, it was quite windy. Instead of fighting the wind, we broke for lunch. By the time we reconvened, the weather was more cooperative.

I have to say that the opportunity to work with those three guys was a blessing. I was very fortunate to have them as volunteers for my on-playa setup and support crew. All of them were totally reliable, hard working, highly skilled, enthusiastic problem solvers, and a lot of fun to have around. They put a lot of time and energy into my project in addition to their other projects on the playa with the massive solar array and Burners Without Borders. Their efforts with those other projects directly serve extended communities beyond the actual event. The solar array is being donated to the communities of Gerlach and Lovelock, towns close to Black Rock Desert, in order to power a hospital, a school, and other public buildings. These are communities that are currently debating the extension of coal-mining operations that would be detrimental to the environmentally sensitive area. The hope is that the solar array will mitigate the need to exploit non-renewable and environmentally damaging energy sources. Similarly, Burners Without Borders served many communities in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. They collected usable lumber and supplies to take back to the communities most affected by that natural disaster and established strong grassroots networks for their humanitarian aid. Their projects have now expanded beyond the areas affected by Katrina and have come to be a model for creative solutions to various environmental and humanitarian problems. In addition, Burning Man’s 2007 theme, The Green Man, provoked a lot of serious discussion and commentary amongst the participants and artists, many of whom sought out sustainable resources and materials from which to make art that was largely focused on or suggestive of environmental issues.

Despite being physically and mentally exhausted from the day’s work, I went back out to the Greenhouse Sunday night after dinner to work inside on the lights and the altars. Before I even had my lights on, I started getting visitors, typically one lone wanderer at a time. I didn’t get much work done beyond basic light setup because I kept getting willingly pulled into great conversation and connections with curious strangers. The first person who approached me was a handsome young man from Tucson. He said he was wandering around the playa and felt drawn to that particular spot (which is something I kept hearing over and over throughout the week). He inquired about the project and wanted to get an idea about the concept behind it.

I gave him a brief rundown about how this Greenhouse was not growing plants but, instead, was growing dreams and meaningful engagement with the world. I told him how there will be altars inside that will have signs that say things like: “Dreams are Seeds… what do you want to grow?” “Roots… How can you nurture new growth?” “Fruits…What shape will your dream take?” “Compost…What do you need to let go of to make room for your dreams?” And I told him the center altar will be dedicated to Love, from which all things emerge and unto which they will return. I explained that the installation is powered 100% by solar energy and just about all of the materials are found objects, recyclable, compostable, re-appropriated, donated, or otherwise sustainable. And I told him that what I really want people to take away from the work is a deeper understanding of themselves. I explained that when people act out of a place of center, balance, and wholeness, they have an instinctive sense of the right and the good, and all they do becomes that. And how in that space we can still account for the struggles and hatred and turmoil in the world because we see that those are just one expression of the infinite forms it can take, and how all those things arise from fragmentation. And I explained that by engaging in the beautiful, we must attune to the sadness also, because it is there, in sadness, that beauty resides. And, really, our only work is the Work we do on ourselves to be fully engaged, integrated, authentic human beings. And from that sense of Self, we come to care, by extension, for the wellbeing of our human communities, other creatures, natural resources, and the planet. And I explained that my art was just my attempt to waken people up to that, to recognize and reflect those who are already awake, and to expand our collective capacity to experience that understanding, to put it in action. He just stood there with his eyes wide open and with an even wider smile and said in the softest, most genuine way, “You are so beautiful.” He proceeded to recite a lovely, relevant poem and then gave me a beautiful necklace that he made that had a Buddha sitting on a lotus. And he was just the first. Ray, from the Temple crew, came by and we had a nice long chat about the smaller, intimate spaces on the playa and how there are actually very few, and it is those spaces he prefers. He came back shortly after our chat to pull me outside to see how the city was all lit up for the first time. I had several other visitors that night, most of whom came back on other nights to visit again. It was beautiful and affirming of all the reasons why I wanted to bring art to the playa. By the time I called it a night, I was completely exhausted and totally satisfied.

Since I still had all my tools and unpacked art in the Greenhouse, I put a piece of rebar in the door so it could not easily be opened. I thought that by making it moderately difficult to enter, that the space would be respected and left alone. The next morning, Shanta was the first on site and discovered that the door had been forced open, bending the doorframe and setting it off its track. No major damage was done other than making the door sticky to open, but I mention it because it was the first moment when I felt like the space had been somehow disrespected and violated. The juxtaposition of the overwhelmingly beautiful connections and life-affirming moments that were experienced in that space with the numerous acts of disrespect to the art, including theft and vandalism, was to be a nearly constant theme throughout the week. The conflict between those two extremes – and my emotional responses to each – was to shape my experience of the event and my concept of what it means to bring art to such a place where traditional boundaries blur or disappear altogether and where radical acts of expression – and the occasionally unthinking and disconnected forms those acts can take – reign supreme.

Monday was a fantastic day. With Shanta’s help, I set up the altars inside the Greenhouse and found myself way ahead of my timetable. I felt so incredibly satisfied by the work we did that day. It was hot as hell inside the Greenhouse, but I plugged away at what needed to be done. Even in the heat and sun, I savored those moments of hard work, of creating a space that would shape people’s experience, of visually delineating that which is sacred. The altars turned out to be even more beautiful than I ever imagined.

Monday night was the lunar eclipse, and I spent most of the night at or near the Greenhouse out in the deep playa. I wanted to do some magic to draw the right people there throughout the week and to protect it from the wrong people. I was standing outside with Shanta, conjuring up some blue Feri fire, and sending out a beacon to draw those who would benefit from experiencing the space and making a cloud to shroud it from those who could not understand. The magic was unbelievably powerful. I could feel it and see it and taste it. I had just finished sending out a big, potent ball of energy and then grounded the rest into the earth just as a beautiful, fey woman walked up and gave me something. She said, “This is for you,” as she looked me straight in the eyes with that otherworldly knowing and then walked off, disappearing into the night. Shanta was facing directly towards her, yet he did not see her. I looked at the thing she placed in my hands. It was an egg-shaped percussion shaker that she had painted with the most beautiful, intricate green and black design. I marveled at its beauty and the moment that it symbolized for me. It was the seed, the potentiality, and the fruit, the gift of the present. It was the fullness of that moment and the dream that others would be also. It was the illusive magic of magnetism, clarity, and insight. It was the anchor to the spell. I hid it inside the Greenhouse on the altar for Love, in the Buddha’s lap under her robes. Every time I went inside from that point onward, I felt the egg underneath the fabric. An anchor. A reminder.

Later that night, as the moon was beginning to eclipse, I was doing tai chi with Shanta at the Greenhouse. The moon was nearing full eclipse, and as I was just beginning to go through the long form on my own, he said, “The Man is on fire!” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!” “Seriously, the Man is on fire!” So we hopped on our bikes and rode over to watch the Man burn and then be put out. It was great. I alternated between yelling “Save the Man!” and “Let him burn!” No one knew what to think. It was beautiful. That is not to say that I condone anyone in anyway desecrating other people’s things, but there was something at least a little poetic about that moment.

It was an act of irreverent rebellion, taking the most central idol of Burning Man and re-appropriating it in a convention-defying act against that very thing upon which so many people imagine a culture to turn. And in that burning, there was something reclaimed by everyone, namely that unmistakable sense of the spontaneous wonder and excitement of encountering that which is unexpected, out of the ordinary, displaced so long enough as to provoke earnest consideration and thought. It is in those very moments in life that we come to understand the fullness and richness of living, of opening our eyes to seeing the unexpected in the ordinary, and thereby we come to live more integrated, authentic, and meaningful lives. The art gains its significance
