Now is the time to get your LED Christmas light strings before they go away. A single deep cycle RV / Marine battery (similar to the size of a car battery) can run an inexpensive 12 volt DC to 250 watt AC inverter (less than $40) for many nights depending on how many strings you buy.

Ooh! I can offer some tips on adding solar pathlites to sculptures-- in my opinion, it's a great way to get bang for your buck, and you don't have to be an electronics whiz to set the whole thing up (I myself am a bit intimidated by 12-volt batteries and expensive big panels).

Red's tip about soldering some longer wire onto the LED in the pathlite is spot-on. I've done several lantern-type projects using the 'guts' from a pathlight. Upside is electrical simplicity (since the circuit is pre-made, and easy to cut apart into component bits and reattach to get the panel and light configured in the right places). Downside is you have one LED per tiny panel, so you'll have to get a lot of them to get a lot of light in your sculpture.

Another great resource from the AEZ that you can't get to from our main page is our Wiki:
http://www.ae-zone.org/dokuwiki/doku.php

I've got some pics on my profile of some SUNflowers that I made using this part:

Hope that helps! Send me a message if you would like more help.

Best buys of the year on solar path lights usually occur in the spring. Just picked up 10 white LED plastic malibu solar lights for $29.99 at my local big box hardware store.

On the original little post, elevated by some pvc pipe or pokin thru the shade fabric, that's a load of camp lighting that works without fail and turns on and off automatically . . . the possibilities are endless !!!

I'v used solar path light to illuminate the inside of glass sculptures. By unsoldering the LED and soldering a wire in it's place with the LED resoldered on the end of the wire, I was able to place the illumination inside and have the solar part on the exterior.

If your interested in a larger solar system, check out the Alternative Energy Zone (AEZ) at Burning Man. We give tours and demonstations most days around noon.

i am working on a large sculpture as part of my theme camp this year, and really need for it to be lit from within. i would rather it NOT be run on a generator- would prefer solar. if anybody has a little energy and knowledge to spare, i would much appreciate it- would love to chat and tell you further about my design.
thanks!
