I'll be building a decent sized installation this year, and am looking for any and all help in planning/design. The idea is pretty simple, really. I've collected about 200 skis, and will be installing them in a vertical positon on the playa to create a field of skis approximately 100 feet by 300 feet. The center of the field will include an area for reflection, a couple of benches, and a solitary pair of skis that belonged to a friend.
I've tentatively decided to mount the skis on the playa by driving 3 foot rebar stakes into the ground about 2 feet deep, and using the remaining 1 foot section to bolt to the ski tail. I'll be drilling four holes in the ski and fitting with 2 u-bolts with nuts and plates.
So, my questions are:
Do you think this approach will work?
Will the wind be too strong for rebar stakes, are the stakes going deep enough, is 1 foot long enough on the ski?
What's the best way, within a reasonable budget, to drive the rebar?
How would you light the project at night?
What else should I be considering?

Re: Suggestions for an art virgin
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:45 PMYour rebar is probably overkill! Two feet deep into the playa is huge. To hold up a 10x20 carport only requires 8 rebar, and less than two feet in. i.e. 24" rebar sunk about 16".
But bigger is better.
Now, that is a ton of rebar to place. I would use a Demolition Hammer and a ground rod driver attachment. (I think I got the name of the tool correct; I only ever have used one to drive rebar!) And a stake puller to get them all out at the end.
It is a moderately expensive power tool, but everone in camp will oove you! Oh, and it will need a generator, I have never seen a cordless version.

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 4:16 PMThat's some good wisdom from Martini Steve. Ditto on the steak puller. What are you going to light the installation with or will it double as an art car death trap?

Re: Suggestions for an art virgin
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 9:39 PMI can't make any suggestions related to your rebar, but lighting has been on my mind. I have been reading about your project and remember that it is sort of a memorial to your friend. Good for you, BTW. Something somewhat subdued might follow the theme a bit more than major lighting all over the place. And with all the holes you will be digging, something relatively easyprobably sounds good. To that end, I would suggest that you use solar garden lights. I saw in the Skymall catalog this afternoon some solar lights that you can direct to light up your trees or whatever. A combination of both this and the regular type might work well. -

Tue, May 13, 2008 - 9:53 PM100 x 300 feet. Wow that's going to need a lot of night lighting. You're basically creating 200 knife edges sticking up out of the playa. As I advised on the BM tribe; the DPW will remove and dispose of playa art that creates a un-illuminated night hazard. -

yep, I've got lighting covered. Perimeter is 260 feet, thank goodness, not 800. -

Re: Suggestions for an art virgin
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 3:19 PMCross post from the main tribe, but hopefully with 90% less snarkiness. I had planned on using u-bolts with nuts and plates to fix the skis to the driven rebar. Now I'm considering using two hole emt straps instead. I can buy the u-bolts for about $.80 per. I can buy the emt straps for about $.08 per, and with bolts and nuts the price on the straps is less than half. Thoughts?
