our camp is planning to use the 10x20 foot carport structures from cosco for our communal spaces. we want to paint them to look like mausoleums i.e. stone archways and stained glass windows, i'm ok with an airbrush and have all the equipment. they look to be made of the same polyester reinforced vinyl that the omnipresent blue tarps are. i have some ideas but if anyone has experience painting these i'd like to find out what worked. the last thing i want is to get to the playa and have the paint peel off and turn into the moop from hell project......

We painted ours 2 ways - the top with spray paint from Kryon called FUSION PAINT - adheres to plastic. I did the backdrop in...a sharpy (actually 50 or so sharpies - I know, I'm nutty). I also tried to spray paint the vinyl monkey but he never dried completely. The sharpy rubbed off it you leaned on it but it didn't turn to moop. I posted a photo of it if you want to see.

Did the fusion paint on the top ever have any problems? Might it flake off if it were on the walls where people will bump into it?

no......it was fine. I rolled it up, took it down, its been to the playa 2 years now, no problems..... it hasn't changed and didn't fade....the structure itself didn't hold up well after the second year. The wind got the best of it. But the top part was fine.

there were 3 of us and we were each in charge of decorating a wall for the shade structure. One person used regular spray paint and it flaked off so we never hung it up. The other person never did theres, and I sharpied my ass off and it ended up rubbing off (but just on you are something, it did not create moop).

was the top the same material as the sides? the sharpies look great. i'll have to grab some of that krylon fusion i know that they have it at home dump.

Is the top the same as the sides........ ? yes, I think so.... I will try and google the shade structure and see if there are any specifications that would support my brain recall.....

Oh............and you'll need more paint then you think. One can is all I had to do the top and that is why it looks so spotty.

So I just packed up my "Skullco Starport" after painting with Fusion spray paint and letting it dry/fuse in the sun for a couple of days. I am SOOPER happy with the result - ZERO flake or moop of any kind even when folded over and rubbed together briskly. I'll post pics after the event but if you want to check it out, look for me around 8 & Fossil - that's where we'll be trying to head durring the midnight land grab. I bet you can guess the theme of the paintjob ;o)
