have you ever seen the sail of a sailboat?

when wind rips across the surface of a sail, it tends to flutter at a high frequency, much like shaking out a bed sheet, or even more extreme cracking a whip. Unless the material is permanently affixed, it will probably end up as MOOP.

the Army canvas is great but many are treated with a water repellent or in the old days, oil. A can of white, oil based spray paint would give you a good surface to paint on, water based might be repelled and not adhere.

As for a good paint to create your art... I dunno. =-)

Acrylic, latex tempora - all of these if applied to thickly could crack when you fold it. I recommend especially against tempera, as it can flake off and blow away rather easily (moop). There are some additives to make acrylics more flexible, such as a gel medium. When grommetting, either add a tape reinforcement or fold the cloth over (double it up) on the sides with the grommett. What were you attaching it to?

our art piece this year was a large, cloth covered wooden crane - sembazuru, the temple of community - we had cloth coverings on the wings, head, and tail. and to be quite honest, i was very surprised at how well the cloth handled the winds

hi. i was just looking for some advice.
the art piece i was thinking of creating would essentially be just a big piece (10 feet x 10 feet say) of canvas, grommeted as like a tarp, to be hung horizontally face-down about 15 feet high. upon that canvas will be a painting using acrylic paint.

my questions and advice seeking are as follows:
what kind of canvas is the sturdiest to withstand the playa? is there a particular trhread count? will acrylic paint hold up in the sun? acrylic hold up in the rain? and will it crack and fold during transport? if canvas is grommeted, does it weaken the canvas? would latex paint be better? tempera??

thanks :)
